Drip-off coating is one of the most premium effects available in print finishing — and one of the most misunderstood. In short, it produces a striking contrast between matte and gloss areas on the same printed surface, giving depth and a tactile difference that buyers immediately read as high-end.
How the effect is created
The contrast comes from a combination of coatings that react differently across the sheet, so some areas cure to a rich matte while others stay high-gloss. The result is a surface where the design itself carries two finishes at once — without the look of a single flat coating.
When to use drip-off
Drip-off is ideal when you want a whole design — not just small spots — to carry contrast and feel considered. It works beautifully on premium folding cartons, cosmetic and gift packaging, and covers where shelf standout matters. If your brief is "make this feel premium across the whole pack," drip-off is often a stronger choice than a spot finish alone.
Drip-off vs spot UV
Spot UV places high gloss on selected elements like a logo. Drip-off spreads matte-gloss contrast across the design for a more all-over premium effect. Many premium packs use lamination as a base and then choose between — or combine — these effects. A finishing partner can help you decide which suits your artwork.
