Drip-Off Matte & Gloss Coating
Rich matte and high-gloss on the same surface — the signature contrast finish that makes packaging look, and feel, worth more.
What is drip-off coating?
Drip-off is a two-coating process that lets rich matte and high-gloss sit side by side on the same printed surface — with no separate die or pass for each area. A matte base goes down first, then a gloss coating that "drips off" the matte zones and cures only where you want shine. What you're left with is a bold, tactile contrast between velvety matte and mirror-bright gloss that the eye — and the fingertips — pick up in an instant.
That contrast is what makes a piece read as premium. It adds depth and movement to artwork, pulls the eye to a logo or product shot, and gives the whole design a considered, high-end feel. It's our signature finish, and one of the most effective ways to make a brand stand apart on a crowded shelf.
Where it works best
Drip-off earns its place when the whole design should feel premium — not just one small element. It's a favourite for:
- Premium folding cartons
- Cosmetic and gift packaging
- Book and brochure covers
- Brand-led retail packaging
- Any design that benefits from matte-gloss contrast
Options to choose from
Matte-gloss contrast
Rich matte against high-gloss highlights.
Full-area effect
Contrast across the whole design, not just spots.
Premium tactile finish
A surface that looks and feels considered.
Drip-off vs spot UV — which should you choose?
Both finishes play with matte-and-gloss contrast, but they answer different briefs. Spot UV places sharp, high-gloss shine on specific elements — a logo, a headline, a pattern — and leaves everything else as printed. It's precise and pinpointed.
Drip-off spreads that contrast across the whole design. Rather than highlighting one element, it gives the entire surface a matte-and-gloss rhythm, so the piece feels rich edge to edge. If the brief is "make this element pop," reach for spot UV. If it's "make the whole pack feel expensive," drip-off is usually the stronger call — and the two can be combined for real depth.
Built on the right base
Drip-off looks its best over a quality laminate. We often pair it with thermal lamination for a refined base, or run it over stock that's been board-laminated for durability through die-cutting, folding and gluing. Share your artwork and stock, and we'll recommend the right build.

Common questions about drip-off coating
What is drip-off coating?
Drip-off is a two-coating finish that places rich matte and high-gloss areas side by side on the same surface. A matte base is applied, then a gloss coating that cures only off the matte zones — creating a tactile matte-and-gloss contrast in one design, without a separate die or pass for each area.
What's the difference between drip-off and spot UV?
Spot UV highlights specific elements with sharp gloss while the rest stays matte. Drip-off spreads the matte-and-gloss contrast across the whole design. Choose spot UV to make one element pop; choose drip-off to make an entire pack feel premium. The two can also be combined.
Which products suit a drip-off finish?
Premium folding cartons, cosmetic and gift packaging, book and brochure covers, and brand-led retail packaging all suit drip-off — anywhere the whole piece should feel considered and high-end.
Do I need lamination before drip-off?
Drip-off performs best over a quality laminate, which gives a smooth, durable base for the coatings. We'll advise whether thermal or board lamination suits your stock and end use, and handle both as one finishing step.
